One question still:
Can you give an example setting:
1-Enter the Gallery only for "Regular Members"
2-Enter the Gallery only for "private members"

For each category. To do your private only view thumbnail part you would need to do the following
Follow pictures attached
Step 1 - click on permissions link for each category
Step 2. Select member group in your case Guest and Regular members give permissions they need and not "View Image Detail"

Repeat process for each category and sub category
You can use copy permission to copy from category
